With the well-known benefits of hosting software in the cloud, market surveys have shown that communications applications have been slow to make the migration. Respondents note that the unique performance, reliability and security concerns of real-time voice and video communications are often barriers to deployment in the cloud. One critical security element, the Session Border Controller, is now offered as virtualized and cloud services. What are the issues that a network designer should consider when moving a security appliance to a cloud function? What are the benefits to moving SBCs to the cloud?
